FM Software Catalog
======================================================================
The software listed here provides MIDI musicians using MS-DOS
computers with inexpensive, easy to use tools to aid in both the
creation and performance of computer-based music.
All FM Software MIDI programs contain a universal MIDI driver with
support for the following interfaces: all Roland MPU-compatibles,
IBM Music Feature card, Key Electronics MIDIator, and Creative Labs
SOUND BLASTER (MIDI only). In most cases, the programs will work
"out of the box", with no special configuration required.
All interactive programs share a common user interface format. Usage
is similar to common spreadsheet programs, to which most users are
already accustomed. Any inputs required are self prompting, and full
on-screen documentation is available. Usage is further simplified if
a Microsoft-compatible mouse is used.
*** SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED ***
If you have received a package designated as "shareware", you have a
fully-functional version of the software. You may use it for up to 30
days. If you continue to use it beyond the evaluation period, you
must register as a licensed user. License registration procedures and
fees are include in this catalog. The most current version of the
software will be sent upon registration.
If you have ordered a product before trying it, you have 30 days to
decide whether you want to keep it. If you decide it's not for you,
simply return it with the original invoice and owe nothing.
Further, if at any time within a year after registration you decide
that the product has not lived up to your expectations, you may return
it for a full refund of the license fee.

*** GENERAL-PURPOSE MIDI SOFTWARE ***
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Watch -- MIDI Analyzer, Patch bay, Sysex utility $25
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Watch is actually three tools in one: a high-level MIDI monitor, a
system exclusive dump processor, and a computerized patch bay.
As a monitor, Watch translates incoming MIDI codes into readable
English descriptions. During normal monitoring, useful abbreviations
of the received messages are displayed. In addition, a review
facility allows data to be re-examined with messages fully described.
There is no need to puzzle over incomprehensible streams of digits.
For diagnostic work, Watch can send specific data sequences to a MIDI
device, and then display its response. A set of "send keys" may be
programmed to send out short MIDI sequences, or to send from disk
files, whenever they are pressed.
When handling bulk dumps, Watch can be used to send system exclusive
messages, or to capture and save them to disk. For example, a dump of
a synthesizer voice bank can be initiated from Watch, and the received
data can be saved to disk as a standard MIDI format file (or as raw
binary data). This data can be resent later to restore the particular
voice data.
Various filtering and patching capabilities give a great deal of
control over the data which is received and resent. It is possible to
block extraneous MIDI messages so that specific data of interest is
more easily viewed. Automatic processing of the MIDI data is also
available, permitting channel redirection, volume changes, trans-
position, note range limiting, and so on. (Note: Due to limitations
of the SOUND BLASTER MIDI interface, this processing may not be usable
with that device.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Play -- MIDI File Playback Utility $25
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes a full-blown sequencer is more than you really need at the
moment. Play can be a quick auditioning tool for standard MIDI files.
Think of it like the DOS "type" command, but for song files. Enter
"play" and the name of a MIDI file and sit back and listen. Or if you
have a list of files, Play can handle them automatically, just as
easily. But that's just the beginning...
Play does, in fact, go well beyond the basics to provide most of the
playback control you might need. As a command line utility, it just
plays - not much more. But when run in its interactive mode, Play is
suitable as a performance tool. When a MIDI file is loaded, it is
scanned and all the pertinent data is displayed by channel, including
note and volume ranges. Any channel may be redirected to any other,
volume levels may be changed, and notes may be transposed. Such
configuration changes, along with textual notes, may be saved for
future use. Normal player functions such as play, pause, rewind, fast
forward, skip, tempo control, song position selection are also
available. Limited revision capability is provided to permanently
change playing options, such as channels, transpose, and volume. With
a mouse, it is even possible to "conduct" the overall dynamics in real
time.
Play is accompanied by Record, a simple but handy MIDI file recorder.
Record is a single track recorder which is useful for quick tests or
recording MIDI bulk dumps.
Registered users of Play are eligible to receive Bonus Package #1.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Play/R -- Memory-resident MIDI File Player $15
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Play/R is a trimmed-down version of Play which can run unattended in
the background while you use your computer for other purposes. It can
play any standard MIDI file with up to 16 tracks. Now you don't need
to be without your MIDI music while working on spreadsheets,
documents, or doing other any other computing chores.
A pop-up window allows playback controls for pause, rewind, fast
forward, skip, and volume. Individual files or Play-compatible song
lists can be specified. Play/R requires 58K of RAM, plus MIDI file
size. It also contains an external programming interface allowing it
to be controlled by other applications.
Registered users of Play/R are eligible to receive Bonus Package #1.

*** FB-01 / MUSIC FEATURE UTILITIES ***
----------------------------------------------------------------------
FM-Edit -- FB-01 / Music Feature Editor/Librarian $35
----------------------------------------------------------------------
FM-Edit provides an easy interface for changing configuration and
voice patches on the IBM Music Feature or Yamaha FB-01.
The FM-Edit main screen controls all configuration information, such
as number of voices, MIDI channels, voice and bank selections, output
levels, etc. This closely matches the configuration charts in the IBM
and Yamaha manuals for easy reference. Where appropriate, numeric
data is represented in English or musical terms for complete clarity.
For example, instead of note number 61, the symbol C#3 would be used.
All changes are instantly reflected in the sound module and may be
auditioned in a variety of ways. All configuration data may be saved
to or loaded from disk. And when help is needed, an electronic
reference manual is just a keystroke away.
On the voice bank screen, all 48 voices in a bank may be previewed,
selected, and auditioned. Any of the 7 active banks may be viewed,
and full banks may be loaded from disk or saved. With a key click,
the parameters which make up a particular voice may be viewed or
altered on the patch design screen. Voice parameters can be altered
and the corresponding changes in the sound may be heard as they are
varied. Full descriptions of the types of data and their uses are
readily available.
FM-Edit was one of the first editors to allow standard MIDI files to
be played in the background to immediately show the effect of changes
on real compositions. All configuration and voice parameters may be
changed in real time while playing. It is even possible to pause,
repeat, or set the song position counter. This is the perfect way to
get the sounds "just right".
Registered users of FM-Edit are eligible to receive Bonus Packages #1
and #2.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
FM-Tune - FB-01/Music Feature Microtonal Editor $10
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The FB-01 and Music Feature allow notes to be tuned to any frequency
in the range of the instrument to an accuracy of approximately 1/100th
of a semitone. This means that entirely new tuning systems are
possible. FM-Tune gives complete control of this feature by allowing
each of the 128 MIDI notes to be assigned its own pitch. New tunings
can be easily entered, auditioned, and saved for future use.
A built-in tempering facility allows experimentation with alternate
12-step scales. A number of pre-defined temperaments are included,
such as Pythagorean, Just, Meantone, and several other popular
historical tunings. These may be used to automatically retune the
sound module for playing in any key. They are easily modified, and
new temperaments may be added by the user.
*** Note: FM-Tune does not support the SOUND BLASTER MIDI interface.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
FB-01/Music Feature Command Line Utility Package $10
----------------------------------------------------------------------
These programs provide easy access to certain FB-01 and Music Feature
functions from the DOS command prompt. Typically, they would be used
in conjunction with the FM-Edit program. Some would be appropriate to
included in a batch file to sequence an overall performance - for
example, changing configurations, loading voice banks, playing songs,
and so on.
LoadBank sends a voice bank previously saved by FM-Edit to a specific
bank within a selected sound module.
LoadConf is similar; it sends configurations created by FM-Edit to a
sound module to set up the instrument for particular performances.
SetConf selects a particular configuration for the current
performance.
Voices produces a formatted list of the contents of a voice bank,
without needing to run FM-Edit.
Play/B is a smaller, batch-only version of Play, compatible in every
way, but without the interactive mode.
Dump is a simple system exclusive dump program for sending quick
binary MIDI sequences to a device when all the functions of Watch are
not needed.
FM2MDX expands FM-Edit voice banks into raw binary patch dump files,
suitable for use with any other software.
CheckMFC is a diagnostic program which tests for proper operation of
the Music Feature.
ResetMFC clears the Music Feature and restores it to its power-up
state.

*** SHAREWARE ***
"Shareware" is not the same as public domain software. It is
protected under applicable copyright laws the same as any other
commercial software. The main disctinction is in the distribution
mechanism. Shareware may be freely copied for evaluation purposes,
and therefore guarantees that the user has ample time to determine its
usefulness before licensing.
No one likes to pay to use software that is only marginally useful, or
which does not work as envisioned. The shareware user knows before
paying anything whether the software will do the job. In addition,
the user is not paying for the high overhead of marketing and
distribution. In general, shareware programs are of the same or better
quality than comparable software available through other channels.
Your support of shareware assures that low-cost, high-quality software
will continue to be developed and improved.
This software is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-
related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly,
ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical
support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at
P.O. Box 5786, Bellevue, WA 98006 or send a Compuserve message via
